Diane Sawyer attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. After graduating from college, she went on to work for various different news organizations in New York City and Washington DC. 

While working for WNBC News in 1977, Diane Sawyer received her first big break when she became a reporter for National Public Radio. In 1979, after working at NBC as a producer and director, she started working as an associate producer with ABC News and then two years later in 1981 moved to a national correspondent at ABC. In 1985, Diane Sawyer became the host of Primetime Live and later joined ABC’s World News Tonight in 1987.

In 1989 while anchored at ABC’s World News Tonight, Diane Sawyer broke the story of Anita Hill accusing Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment during his confirmation hearing for his Supreme Court appointment which eventually led to his withdrawal from that position.
